Saving our precious sight

We are still celebrating all things about our wonderful eyesight as part of #NEHW. We are reminding everyone that over 50% of eyesight loss is AVOIDABLE!

So what should we all be doing to ensure our valuable vision is maintained? Here are the 5 top tips from the RNIB – who of course know a thing or two about eyes. We challenge you to read them and then answer honestly – how many of these pieces of advice do you follow?

RNIB says:

  • Have regular eye tests. Everyone should have their eyes examined AT LEAST every 2 years. Lots of eye issues have NO SYMPTOMS at all. But they can be easily detected by an optician. Eye checks are therefore vital.
  • Stop smoking. Smoking can DOUBLE the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, which usually leads to a gradual loss of central vision – and this is the UK’s leading cause of sight loss!
  • Eat healthily and try to keep to a heathy weight It reduces your risk of eye diseases associated with obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Protect your eyes in the sun. UVA and UVB rays from sunlight can harm your eyes and may increase your chances of getting cataracts and macular degeneration. Wearing British Standard sunglasses can help. You need to look for a “CE” mark of the code “BS EN ISO 12312-1”.Avoid DIY disasters! Apparently DIY causes thousands of eye-related injuries every year! So wear your safety glasses! Sport too…especially racquet sports can also be risky.

Sight is the sense that most of us would fear to lose the most – so let’s make every effort to maintain it. And if there is a reason why this would be a struggle for you on your own, then reach out to an advocate to help. And let’s all see our futures together!
