A fond farewell and a new opportunity!

We are bidding a fond farewell to Carol Gibbons who has stepped down as one of our trustees after 4 years of wonderful service. Here’s what she had to say about her time championing independent advocacy for older people.

“When I first heard about the Older People’s Advocacy Alliance, everyone was so impressed with their professionalism and commitment to doing what people needed.

Some time later, my mum had to have hospital aftercare following a surgery for a broken hip, and she had a really awful experience. What struck me was that even with all my social work and community engagement experience, and my sister’s work as a GP receptionist, it was really hard to get my mum’s views heard.

Advocacy is so important, not just when you are in a crisis, but for autonomy and joy and peace in life.

4 years on, after having worked closely with OPAAL, I am still impressed – especially with how the organisation has reacted to COVID-19 and changed what it does to be the most effective it can be.

I wish everyone on the board the very best for whatever comes next.”

We wish the same to you Carol and we will miss your commitment and your wisdom. Thank you for all you have done.
